I participated in my first local 4H project summer 2023. I was nervous about the process: I was raising an animal that would be slaughtered but I knew that he was going to feed people. Once I got the hang of raising my lamb and learning how to really take care of him and how to feed him well so that he would produce good meat for someone I got really excited about future business opportunities in the meat industry.
The first animal I helped butcher was two of my neighbor’s steer before I started with 4H. I really enjoyed the process and was intrigued by it all. I found it felt very…right. Butchering felt like the man’s God given duty. Taking the animal’s life and preparing it to be used as nourishment felt so provisional. When I sold my lamb at the fair, I realized how much it meant to me to see my work come to completion. To meet the family that my lamb would nourish made it all feel complete to me.
Through 4H I learned how corrupt conventional food sources can be. I wanted to start a business to produce quality meat for the community that is healthy, good and doesn’t rely on supply chains. To be personal and know who I am giving food to and the families that are growing as a direct result of my efforts is the crux of why I want to start this business. To become a producer in my community isn’t something I take lightly and am excited to see where this journey takes me. Join me as I learn a long the way and let’s shorten the supply chain!
